Plot: It’s a big day at Camp Stevenson. They are honored to host President Dwight D. Eisenhower (Gary Sinise), who is celebrating a successful first year for the base. Everyone is on their best behavior as Ike is not just the president; he’s an idol to veterans like Reese (Morris Chestnut). For Vern (Shea Whigham), however, he is a contemporary as they served in the war together. Vern gives him a tour of the facilities. Afterwards, the President asks if Helen is around, he’d love to see her again.

Helen (Judy Greer) is taken to meet with her husband and President Eisenhower. She is a bit star-struck. Ike says that he can tell that Vern is a man that knows what he’s doing and Vern is honored to hear this, thanking him for selecting him for this role. Ike says that’s relevant to what he wanted to talk about. He says that Vern probably saw that the White House Chief of Staff recently resigned and so they are selecting a replacement. Helen’s heart skips a beat. Ike says that, if interested, Vern would be under consideration for the post. He admits that he doesn’t have many years left in his Presidency so he can at least put in a good word with Vice President Nixon. Vern is honored and firmly shakes hands with the President.

The President gives a motivational speech to a packed mess hall with the audience eating out of the palm of his hand, including Phil Christy (Brian Geraghty). Cheryl (Minka Kelly) sits next to him with her mind wandering elsewhere. He spots Sung-min (Sung Kang) and looks longingly at him before starting into an unexpected coughing fit. It intensifies as she looks for water and the hall grows quieter as the President momentarily pauses. Phil, sensing the interruption this has caused, escorts his wife out to get some water from the canteen. The President continues his speech and all resume to normal.

On the last day of school, Buzz (Cooper Hoffman) is more confident than ever before. Instead of biding his time, he approaches Jane (Maddie Ziegler) and asks her out on a date. She accepts. He goes to class and sits next to Gwen (Sydney Park) and Francine (Odessa Young). He asks how Gwen’s dad’s date went and she says he’s got another date so she assumes it went well. That’s when he reveals a planned date of his own. They congratulate him and he says that’s not all. He’s still been thinking over their offer and he’s still sorry he couldn’t help the other night. But he does want to join the band. Gwen and Francine are excited to hear this but

Principal Sparks (Larry Miller) meets with Dennis (Mitchell Hoog) about the incident at the dance. He says there is a strict no-violence policy on school grounds. Dennis finds that ironic, given the military’s whole thing. Sparks says that he does not find Dennis’s humor amusing. He asks why he is getting a harsher punishment than Peter. That’s when Sparks pulls out Dennis’s disciplinary history at past schools, including multiple suspensions for bullying younger students. He says that Dennis is now on his last leg before he’s expelled.

At the Christy home, Phil asks to talk with Cheryl. She can tell he’s been drinking. He says he can’t believe he made her look like a fool in front of the President. She says that was not her intention. He then tells her that he’s heard rumors that she was flirting with a teacher at the school at the dance. She says that is ridiculous, they were just conversing. He says what is ridiculous is his wife getting touchy with a foreigner. She seems extra offended by his accusations now that he’s brought Sung-min’s race into it. Phil slaps her with force before immediately apologizing. She says that she’s heard that apology so many times that she’s numb to it and walks out.

Sung-min is leaving school when he spots Cheryl waiting to talk to him. While she starts to speak, he first apologizes for what he said at the dance, he what it might look like if they danced together. She asks what he means by that. He says he’s ruined enough marriages for one lifetime.

Helen asks Buzz to come to her office. She says she heard through the grapevine that he might have a date planned. He says that might be true. She smiles and says she hopes it goes well, Jane seems like a sweet girl. She says her and his father have something to discuss with him. But for now, she has something to ask of him. A new family has recently moved here and they’re from the same base in upstate New York that the Gentries came from. She was wondering if he’d be interested in helping their kids get acquainted with the new country. He shrugs his shoulders and says sure. She shows him a picture of the family and there’s only one thing that immediately catches his eye, standing tall in the middle of family portrait: Ruth Daniels (Kaia Gerber), his old crush.

"Not all of the show's attempts at nostalgia driven storytelling landed, but the cast is solid throughout, bringing a little extra life to the characters that the scripts didn't always provide." - Mark Rawls, Seattle Times

"American High School ended up with a few too many characters than it knew what to do with and moved a whole hell of a lot slower than it needed to. Going in, I wanted to like it, but it never seemed to try hard enough to grab the audience." - Brenton Smalls, Playboy

"The cast from Cooper Hoffman (instant award contender), Judy Greer (knockout as usual), Shea Whigham (underdog as usual), Maddie Ziegler, Minka Kelly, and mostly, Morris Chestnut;. They all bring this whole thing to a different level. I only hope the writers and showrunner take the bland beginning to a more interesting level storyline." - Merle Eliassen, Film Journal International
