A Second Look: Queen Mary

Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.

With this season's horror films not doing great at the box office or with critics, it inspired me to find an unsuccessful horror film for this segment. I eventually settled on Queen Mary from Season 8. Just the second film from writer Alex Conn, the film featured a cast of talented young stars such as Tom Holland, Tye Sheridan, Nick Robinson, Anya Taylor-Joy and Katherine Langford. With a cast like that, you would think the film would have something to offer. When it was released, critics slammed the film for unoriginal scares and for simply not being very scary in general. You can count me among those critics, as that was basically the sentiment I gave in The Roundup.

Looking at Queen Mary now, and it is evident that time has not done the film any favors. There are no original scares, with Conn's script resorting to cheap jump scares and lazy shock value. It really was a missed opportunity as the film's concept/set-up could work for a horror film, but it is not handled well enough by the filmmakers to make it all work as it should/could. Even worse, having seen how successful each of the young cast members have become since this film, it proves to have been a waste of an immense amount of talent.
