Reaction: With his third starring biopic role, Andrew Garfield is quickly becoming the LRF biopic king. While this film didn't gross the same type of numbers as American Playboy, where Garfield played Hugh Hefner, it still grossed over $100 million, so the studio is happy with the gross and the accompanying profit.
“While Shoe Dog is a rather by-the-book biographical film at times, Bennett Miller’s steady direction and the casting across the board keep this solid throughout. Garfield’s lead performance, in particular, levels up when the film takes a genre shift into courtroom drama in the final act.” - Michael St. Felix, The Charlotte Observer
"While Garfield appeared to stay clear of Phil Knight's famously bad haircuts, he still managed to embody his subject remarkably well. Shoe Dog is definitely a bit too formulaic at times and suffers from a dorky title, but it is still a solid biopic entry." - Evan Kane, Buffalo News
"I didn't hate Shoe Dog as an overall story, but its primary subject matter - Phil Knight- never feels particularly likable or relatable. I found myself rooting for pretty much everyone but him, despite a good performance from Andrew Garfield (perhaps too good and too close to Knight's real personality)." - Mark Rawls, Seattle Times
Rated PG-13 for thematic material and some language
